This session explores the context, history and plural intersectional identities of Jewish people in the UK and beyond. It gives clarity on what antisemitism is within the context of racisms such as anti-Muslim and anti-Black racisms. We will explore how to stand up against antisemitism in society and in education specifically. There can be confusion about what constitutes antisemitism and the difference between anti-Zionism and antisemitism. Many educators are afraid to get things wrong. Much of the training offered by Zionist organisations enforces adherence to a specific definition of anti-semitism which is widely contested by Jewish and other scholars as it can conflate anti-semitism and anti-Zionism.This session will draw on Penny’s lived experience as a Jewish, dual British-Israeli citizen who taught in Jerusalem schools for a decade, and will help you differentiate between these separate and different concepts of Jewish, Israeli, Zionist and anti-Zionist.
