We released our third Arts Council funded Reflecting Realities report in autumn 2020. The Reflecting Realities: Survey of Ethnic Representation within UK Children’s Literature 2019 shows that there has been an increased presence of BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) characters in children’s books published in 2019, compared to previous years.  The writers say, ‘we welcome a year on year rise in representation in children’s literature. We do not however think that the work has finished. In 2019 33.5% of the school population were of minority ethnic origins, in stark contrast only 5% of children’s books had an ethnic minority main character.’
