The festival takes place on 4-5 July 2024 at Wellington College, Crowthorne and you can hear from the BAMEed Network on Friday 5 July. Here’s a schedule of the sessions taking place.
9.30 to 10.15 – Exploring Intersectionality: Race & SEND in Education
BAMEed SEND leaders: Amjad Ali, Frances Akinde (also BAMEed Trustees) and Priya Bhagrath
Intersectionality of race and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in educational settings. This session will provide a platform for insightful dialogue and exploration of the challenges and opportunities faced by BAME students with SEND. Our expert panelists will share their perspectives, experiences, and strategies for promoting inclusivity and equity in education, shedding light on the nuanced intersections of race, disability, and educational support needs.
10.30 to 11.15 – Unveiling True Allyship: Beyond Performative Actions

In this discussion, we will delve into the intricate nuances of allyship. This session will explore the stark differences between genuine allyship and mere performative gestures. Our panelists will dissect what authentic allyship truly entails and how it can be distinguished from superficial acts.
11.45 to 12.30 – Transforming Education: recognising and eliminating deficit language in educational settings.

Deficit language perpetuates harmful stereotypes and hinders academic and personal growth for students from underrepresented and marginalised communities. Our panelists will share insights, experiences, and strategies on how we can ensure that we are not elitist in our conversations around language.
12.45 to 13.30 – A Black Boy’s Community
Johnoi Josephs (Black Men Teach), Albert Adeyemi (Black Men Teach), David Pebble, Isaac Akinde, Anthony Sappong, Adrian Dunkley
The panel discussion will feature Black male educators who will share their unique journeys, insights, and perspectives on teaching in today’s educational landscape. Navigating and breaking through barriers to enable them to inspire the next generation. The panellists will offer valuable insights into the impact of representation, mentorship, and culturally responsive teaching practices in addition to creating a supportive community around Black boys.
14.45 to 15.30 – Empowering Diversity: Exploring Coaching in Education
Lizana Oberholzer (BAMEed Network Trustee), Cath Blayney, Elizabeth Olulari, Sharon Porter, Joylene Cole-Davis, Amanda Wilson, Yamina Bibi
This discussion will focus on the role of coaching in fostering diversity and inclusion in education. We will discuss the transformative power of coaching methodologies within educational settings, particularly in addressing the unique needs and challenges faced by BAME individuals.
