SUMMARY:David Chariandy in conversation with Reni Eddo-Lodge
DESCRIPTION:Brother by David Chariandy is a timely\, essential novel that tells the tale of brothers Francis and Michael. Coming of age in the outskirts of a sprawling city\, the brothers battle against careless prejudices and low expectations. Lovingly detailing the love and relationship between a mother and sons\, Brother carefully builds on the impact of race\, masculinity and the senseless loss of young lives to devastating effect. \nBrother is David’s first novel to be published in the UK and has won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and was longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. \n‘A breath-taking achievement. It is a compulsive\, brutal and flawless novel that is full of accomplished storytelling with not a word spare’ – Observer. \nDavid will be in conversation with award-winning journalist and author Reni Eddo-Lodge. Reni is best known for her British Book Award-winning title Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race. A collection of pieces exploring race and racism within the UK\, Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race discusses the influence of black history\, white dominance and the links between class and race. \nPlease join us for what promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking discussion based around Brother. \nTickets will cost £6.00\, or £4.00 for those with a Waterstones Plus card.

SUMMARY:Black Dolls: The Power of Representation
DESCRIPTION:Films like Black Panther are finally giving children of Black heritage empowering superheroes that look like them – but it’s been a long wait. \nWe’ve joined forces with the National Trust to launch an exhibition exploring Black dolls and childhood through the 20th and 21st centuries at National Trust Museum of Childhood\, Sudbury Hall\, Sudbury\, Derbyshire\, DE6 5HT from 16 June to 4 November 2018\, open daily from 11am-5pm – including the controversial Golliwogs of the past and today’s Black Barbies. \nThe exhibition is called ‘Black Dolls: The Power of Representation’ and it’s aimed at all ages and communities\, including families. Featuring both historical and contemporary dolls from the Museum of Childhood’s unique collection\, the exhibition will take a revealing look at how Black people are represented by Black dolls and Black characters in children’s books – and their impact on childhood and beyond. It will also include Black dolls and children’s books from Museumand’s own collection\, from both Britain and the Caribbean. \nThe Museum of Childhood’s collection of Black dolls includes dolls from a range of countries and girl\, boy and adult dolls in a variety of fabrics and materials – from antique and vintage dolls to 21st century examples. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is part of the Heritage Lottery Fund supported ‘Exploring Childhoods’ project.
